What is Opening a Position
Opening a position refers to the action of a futures trader buying or selling a futures contract. Opening a position, also called establishing a position, is the process of converting a certain proportion of cash assets in our account into futures contracts. Simply put, it means turning money into futures contracts. There are two directions for opening a futures position:
① If you expect the price of the futures contract to rise in the future, the corresponding action is to buy to open a position, which in industry jargon is called “going long.” If your buy-to-open order is executed, you become a “long” in the futures market;
② If you expect the price of the futures contract to fall in the future, the corresponding action is to sell to open a position, which in industry jargon is called “going short.” If your sell-to-open order is executed, you become a “short” in the futures market.
